During the long evolution of Chess from Shaturanga in 5th century to modern day Chess, many exotic forms were invented, enjoyed a temporary popularity, and then passed away. One medieval form, which still enjoys interest, is the Byzantine Chess. The circular board has 64 spaces, four citadels, and ordinary chessmen are used.
The pieces have the same moves and powers as in Chess except there is no pawn promotion, and if two of the player’s pawns meet face to face blocking each other, the opponent removes both and then makes his/her move.
If a player’s king is hard pressed and manages to enter his/her opponent’s citadel he/she is considered to have reached a sanctuary and the game is drawn (tie).
